What is PPK?

PPK is a high accuracy GPS like RTK that does not need a radio link between the aerial mapping drone and the base and does the corrections post collection. PPK systems offers many advantages to drones.

1. PPK can eliminate the need for ground control points. Greatly reducing the field work required for each mission.

2. PPK provides better initial position to processing software that cleans up the data reducing many of the point errors seen on common areas in point clouds.

The BAAM.Tech® PPK system offers aerial mapping drones a unique way to collect data. Where most other systems require $40k GPS equipment to collect check shots and do ground surveys, the BAAM.Tech® system is plug and play with the system allowing you to plug the PPK GPS into our ground-based rover to do ground surveys, then plug it into the aircraft and fly. All with a single PPK system.

Performance

While most other system only use L1, or L1/L2 the BAAM.Tech® PPK System uses GPS L1/L2 and GLONASS G1/G2, BeiDou B1/B2, Galileo E1/E5b and SBAS constellations in its base package and does not charge for upgrades for the constellations. This allows for extremely accurate data with most flights having the GPS locked for the entire flight. This also allows for a very fast startup time within a minute or less. BAAM.Tech®’s PPK system outpaces traditional GPS equipment for aerial mapping drones in accuracy and deployment.

Multi-Constellation

When most other PPK systems only use L1 or just L1/L2 the BAAM.Tech® PPK system utilizes GPS L1/L2 and GLONASS G1/G2, BeiDou B1/B2, Galileo E1/E5b and SBAS constellations. This significantly increases the quality of the signal and allows for more accurate data especially in the noisy environments in drones.

The Base

A base is needed to provide corrections to the aircraft’s GPS. The base is setup over a known point or the point is found post collection is a system like Opus. The Base can be any base or CORS station within 5 miles that is at least L1/L2 and GLONASS (ideally off of the same constellations) that is running a 1 second observation and can output a Rinex file.

Ground Rover

The BAAM.Tech® Ground Rover is a great option for setting a ground control point, check shots to validate data or any ground surveys. The Ground Rover will easily attach to a standard survey rod and comes in two PPK configurations.

The GPS system slides in and out of the aircraft allowing the GPS to slide into our ground rover to collect ground control, or check points then can slide back into the aircraft for the PPK flights. This significantly reduces the price of surveying, and allows 1 system for all of the field work.

BAAM.Tech® PPK Software is included with every order and updates are free to customers. Our software is built on the open source (OS) RTK lab and provides an easy to use Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the OS library.
